Today was PARTS OF SPEECH QUIZ! ask Hanlon to take if have not taken so already.

April 4th

We continued with the ESSAY STRUCTURE NOTES.

Got some literary terms:

Active Voice: "The boy threw the ball" uses the active voice, contrast with passive voice. (Direct).

Passive voice: "The ball was thrown by the boy" uses the passive voice. It should generally be avoided, it is often considered weak writing. Contrast with active voice. It puts the subject in the objects place, and vice versa. (Indirect.)

Climatic order: Write the whole thing.
                         3 major points, and how to order points. Start with weak to strongest. Contrast with chronological order, anti-climatic order, illogical order.

Read "Less is not more" article. Find:

  • Statistical evidence. 
  • Shift.
  • The structure,

Hanlon says that you are unable to use any tools during the test, but he will try and give you a hand.

Get an article from the local newspaper and find what it's thesis is. It is due next class.

Martian Chronicles and American colonization-

MC:
  1. Earthmen travel to Mars.
  2. Martians fight with and kill Earthmen. 
  3. Martians most likely killed by chicken pox.
  4. Earthmen colonize Mars, making like Earth in style, government, and ect....
  5. Ben Driscoll on Mars plants trees. 
  6. African-American leave Earth for Mars to avoid stigmatization. 
  7. War breaks out on Earth, and many living on Mars return to fight/help.
  8. Residents of Mars now more martian than Earth men. 

Am. colonization:
  1. European travel to America.
  2. Natives attack Europeans.
  3. Many Natives killed by small pox.
  4. European colonize America and make it like Europe.
  5. Johnny Appleseed travels to America planting apple trees.
  6. Puritans leave Europe for America to avoid stigmatization.
  7. War breaks out in Europe, and many return to Europe to fight (WWI, and II).
  8. Residents of America are ow more American than European.
Theme:  Humans may cause themselves more harm than good.

March 30th

Welcome back!

Make sure to finish ALL term two work before mid-April, will not be accepted after.
Do all of term 3 assignments! Such as:

  • Ballad of the black fox pelt.
  • Root Quiz 5.
  • David questions.
  • Parts of Speech sheet.
Got Root Quiz 6 words today.

PLEASE GET "THE FIRE BALLOONS" NOTES DONE ASAP!

Coma and Conjunction: When joining two complete thoughts, use a comma AND a conjunction. 
                                    EG: The dog laughed, but the cat cried. 

Semi-Colon: Use where you would use a period IF the two"sentences" on either side are closely related.
                                 EG: I like pizza; I do not like anchovies. 

Subordinate Clause:  If one part of the sentence starts with ALTHOUGH, WHILE, BEFORE, AFTER, DURING, SINCE, BECAUSE, DESPITE, and WHEN...ect... then it could be joined to a complete thought with a comma. 
                               EG: Although philology is my favorite subject, I also like philosophy.

Title references Teasedale's poem, BUT this story emphasizes our machines indifference to humanities annihilation.

Music and Religion referenced.

Similar to "The Veldt"s happy-life home.

House is comparable to Hathaway's family.

No people in story.

The House is the protagonist struggles to carry out/maintain daily routines. Fire is antagonist.

PG.220-224: The automatic house carries out it's daily routines in a destroyed neighbourhood; the dog dies, and house cleans.

PG. 224-225: Describing life in the Nursery.

PG.225- 226: House reads the poem.

PG.226-228: House burns and dies.

In absence of having a perspective,the house cannot guide judgement.

SENTENCE COMBINING STRATEGIES:

  1. Em-Dash: Used to indicate an interruption of thought.
    • If you were going to -- if you dictated what we spoke -- like I'm using them right now -- you would need a lot of em-dashes. (first em-dash is causing a "re-start", other two work together.)
