Pick a poem for Monday, so we can do a POETRY CAFE! 

The poem should be no less than 18 lines long, and MUST BE APPROPRIATE!! It can be longer, just no shorter.

2. Who was the most unlikable character we encountered?

May 9th

Malapropism: The incorrect use of a word. "bad use". (Bottom).
Spoonerism: Mix up first letter of words.

Did a creative writing assignment with malapropisms.

A changeling is a mystical being: if there is something wrong with the baby (defect) blame on fairies. Called it a changeling- "fairy child". Not their TRUE child- a replacement.

• Using the wrong 'you' can be insulting.

Got PARTS OF SPEECH test back, please get this done, or if you got less than 60%, you can retake.


We did a list for: "DREAM TROPES", and "ROMANTIC COMEDY TROPES".

A trope is a characteristic common to something--- horror and supernatural.

We did a 5 minute free write about a dream we have had. Don't stop writing, just write anything.

2 homework assignments:

1. Think of a romcom that meets as many things on the list.
2. Common relationship (romantic) problems?

Dream tropes:

• Fluidity of identity.
• Fluidity of environment.
• Exaggerated emotions.
• Non-sequential.
• Missing info.
• Movement altered.

Romantic comedy tropes:

• A reason the two leads are not together (hate, 3rd party interference.)

Today I did my lesson!

We used "The Fire Balloons" to make a 3C-PIST together in class.

P: Peregrine- first and last mentioned, also most followed.

C: Peregrine struggles to persuade Father Stone.

II: "Should we go at all?"... (112).

S: Fire= Beauty, sin, truth.
    Music= Safety/comfort.

C: Stone: Solid; Refuses to change. Antagonist.

     Martians: Reminder of childhood; Sinless, and pure souls of former Martians.

Today was PARTS OF SPEECH QUIZ! ask Hanlon to take if have not taken so already.

We got the handout for an essay outline, and we got time in class to fill out for own essay you will be writing.

April 4th

We continued with the ESSAY STRUCTURE NOTES.

Got some literary terms:

Active Voice: "The boy threw the ball" uses the active voice, contrast with passive voice. (Direct).

Passive voice: "The ball was thrown by the boy" uses the passive voice. It should generally be avoided, it is often considered weak writing. Contrast with active voice. It puts the subject in the objects place, and vice versa. (Indirect.)

Climatic order: Write the whole thing.
                         3 major points, and how to order points. Start with weak to strongest. Contrast with chronological order, anti-climatic order, illogical order.

Read "Less is not more" article. Find:

• Statistical evidence. 
• Shift.
• The structure,

Coma and Conjunction: When joining two complete thoughts, use a comma AND a conjunction. 

                                    EG: The dog laughed, but the cat cried. 

Semi-Colon: Use where you would use a period IF the two"sentences" on either side are closely related.

                                 EG: I like pizza; I do not like anchovies. 

Subordinate Clause:  If one part of the sentence starts with ALTHOUGH, WHILE, BEFORE, AFTER, DURING, SINCE, BECAUSE, DESPITE, and WHEN...ect... then it could be joined to a complete thought with a comma. 

                               EG: Although philology is my favorite subject, I also like philosophy.

The House is the protagonist struggles to carry out/maintain daily routines. Fire is antagonist.

1. Em-Dash: Used to indicate an interruption of thought.
• If you were going to -- if you dictated what we spoke -- like I'm using them right now -- you would need a lot of em-dashes. (first em-dash is causing a "re-start", other two work together.)
