Oct 30

Today we read "The October Game" by Ray Bradbury. How does he create horror?
Write down definition on back of story for:
Horror: An intense feeling of fear, shock, or disgust.
And
Terror: Extreme fear.

Literary term: Irony: when you are led to expect one thing but the opposite occurs.

ROOT QUIZ 2 CLASS HEADS UP!!! (Monday, November 2nd).

PEE is officially due!
Made a list of "What makes a good reader?"
Articles: The, a, an.
Pronouns: A word that takes the place of a noun.

With this knowledge of articles and pronouns, we got the noun worksheet and figured out where they are in each sentence. (#1-15).

Read the poem: "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud" by William Wordsworth . Parallelism, personification, simile, hyperbole, repetition, metaphor note. Motif of dancing. Breakdown the poem. It has a Iambic tetrameter, and is a sestet.

"Bliss not found in stores next to iPhones" newspaper article. Epigraph is the quote at beginning.

Literary term: Characterization, Setting, foreshadow.
Course Question "Earth men".
Crisis/climax of "Earth men", it contains a lot of dialogue- POV?
POV types: 1st person: Character in story, telling the story.
                  2nd person: You (the reader) are in the story (a character).
                  3rd person: Omniscient:  All characters' thoughts.
                                       Limited omniscient: One character's thoughts.
                                      Objective: In no ones thoughts.

Went over types of characters: Flat character: Not developed (Short story).
                                                 Round character: Developed (Novel).
                                                Static: Not growing (Short story).
                                                 Dynamic: Changes Significantly. (Novel)
                                                Stock/stereo type: Cliché
Finished "Earth men" worksheet.

Course question Chapter. 2 and 3 of "Martian Chronicles".
Read new chapter- "Earth men", got a worksheet for the chapter. Did a chapter breakdown.
"Earth men" had a motif of Temperature.

Grammar notes: Objects: Nouns (Pronouns) that are not subjects.
                           Direct objects: The non-subject nouns that most directly relate to the verb/noun.
                           Indirect objects: As above, but less direct.
                          Objects of preposition: The noun/pronouns that follow a preposition.
                          Preposition: Words that indicate where something is (Snoopy's dog house).

I'm going to the post office.
The clown in the tent gave the cat a kiss on the nose.

Read chapter of book- "Summer nights". Noted on chapter. Foreshadow something will come. Motif: music; seasons/temperatures.

Continued work on "Noun" handout.
Did our orthography quiz.
Used dictionaries.
Worked on rules of spelling.
Did a poem- "She Walks in Beauty" by Lord Byron we course questioned the poem and broke it down. A/B/A/B/A/B...A+B= Iambic tetrameter. 6 line stanza= sestet.
Find parallelism, metaphor, simile...ect.
Did Literary terms: Parallelism.

Theme statement on "Ylla" for the 3C-PIST,
Worked on nouns- handout "Concrete and Abstract" we learned difference between the two and underlined/circled them. After, on the same page we put an "S" for the subject noun. #1-15.
In "Ylla" there is a POV shift.

Today we got Root Quiz 2 words and wrote a paragraph on the chapter of "Ylla".

We worked on a descriptive paragraph minimum of half a page making a Martian home with a metaphor ("Ylla" her house a flower) single spaced.
We read a chapter of "Martian Chronicles" - "Ylla".

Worked on more similes,
Read poetry- Ben Jonson's "Song to Celia", we broke it down into parts, and we paraphrased it. A/B/C//B/A/B/C/B..... A+C= Iambic tetrameter, B= Iambic trimester. 8 line stanza= Octete

Sept 23

Today in class we
Found out what a metaphor is, how can we find a metaphor (on a story by Hanlon "Ear-Candy"),
What is a simile?
We learned how to make similes on a handout sheet ("As/Like/Finish the sentence") You have to complete 10 of these on a separate sheet of paper in a poem. (THIS IS ON BACK OF "SONG TO CELIA").

We made a list of difficult words ( orthography ), write them right and hand in.
